Montmartre Museum
One of the most charming museum!
The best way to discover the fascinating history of Montmartre is to visit this charming museum located in an old house of the 17th century, one of the oldest in Montmartre. With its garden overlooking the last vineyards of Paris you will be immersed in the spirit of Montmartre when it was still a village at the gates of Paris.
The permanent collection reveals its rich culture and its unique landscape with numerous mills, orchards and vineyards and shows its metamorphosis when it was annexed to Paris and started to attract many artists in a bohemian spirit.
Then bars and cabaret such as Le Chat Noir started to offer several performances like shadow theater. All of Paris came to this countryside area to listen to Aristide Bruant or to see la goulue, a famous dancer in le Moulin-Rouge.
This effervescent spirit was also present in the artists’ studios rue Cortot witnessed the passage of several, most of whom lovingly painted their residence.
